On April 11, 2007, Commissioner M. Christine MacMillan, along with Federal and Provincial representatives, opened a $3.6 million renovated Wiseman Centre in St. John's, NL.
The new centre will more adequately address the homelessness issue for the male population of 30-65 year olds.
The 20 self-contained shelter units along with 10 supportive housing units, combined with a comprehensive continuum of supports and services will enable the residents to live as independently as possible and provide them with the necessary skills to be contributing members of society.
Mayor Andy Wells of the city of St. John's in speaking to the crowd of over one hundred invited guests said, "The opening of the newly refurbished shelter, which we are celebrating today, is a very important one for our city. It's another example of The Salvation Army extending their care to people in need."
The time of celebration became complete when a resident of the centre said, "My days of following are now over and with the help of people like the ones at the Wiseman Centre I will succeed. I finally know where I am going in life and I owe that to the wonderful people here at the Wiseman Centre."
