Toronto - Police officers from 51 Division have partnered with community members to deliver a joyous Christmas for kids in their community.

Their annual toy drive was kicked off in the front lobby of the division where teddy bears, toys and all sorts of playthings are beginning to fill the bottom of the tree - and the great hole in the lives of those who need to forget their worries over the holidays.

“It’s a tradition in 51 Division to work with the community,” said Supt. Chris White. “At this time of year it’s extra special to help out and it’s well supported by all the members in the division.

White credited community member Bob Kemp, of the St. Lawrence Business Improvement Association (BIA), for once again bringing all the partners together to bring some Christmas cheer to the division. “He’s got a heart of gold.”

SAS Institute Canada, a software developer, donated $5,000 worth of toys for the third year running.

“To wake up on Christmas morning and not have any presents to open is unforgivable - everybody deserves a present at Christmas,” said SAS president Carl Farrell, of the multi-national business located a few blocks away from the division on King St. E.

“We want to be part of the community,” said Farrell, of the company that allows staff to volunteer one day each quarter with pay. “This is staff-driven, not management. Our staff is continually coming to me with ideas on how to work with the community.”

Many of the toys will be distributed through The Salvation Army, who identifies families that need help around the holidays. Salvation Army Maj. Geoff Ryan said police officers understand that there is a great need around Christmas through their daily work.
