Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., has donated $150,000 to assist in The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services efforts following deadly storms, and floods that have plagued the Midwest. The Salvation Army’s Central Territory, which is comprised of 11 Midwest states, will receive $150,000 to be used toward ongoing relief efforts in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Emergency disaster services (EDS) teams in the Chicago area have been bringing help and hope to residents and emergency responders since August 7th when torrential rains devastated Winnebago County. At the height of service EDS teams were active in six Chicago area counties serving nearly 10,500 meals and distributing 688 clean-up kits.
Some of the hardest hit areas have been in southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin. In Minnesota The Salvation Army has established disaster assistance centers in all six counties declared disaster areas allowing residents easy access to assistance. In Wisconsin emergency disaster services vehicles (canteens) have been roving flood-affected areas. The Salvation Army served over 8,000 meals in less than a week and 550 clean-up kits were distributed.
In Michigan The Salvation Army is responding to two disasters. In western Michigan The Salvation Army was asked to provide aid to firefighters battling one of the worst wildfires in the state’s history. In addition, Salvation Army personnel assisted emergency responders and residents after a tornado touched down in the Detroit area.
As residents in the Fort Dodge, Iowa, area dealt with flooding Salvation Army EDS crews provided meals and helped residents forced to evacuate their homes find shelter.
The Salvation Army in Kansas also has been responding to multiple disasters including continuing to assist residents devastated by the Greensburg tornado and responding to the recent flooding across the state.
