Launch Of The National Disaster Training Program

Since the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City in September of 2001, with the help of a substantial grant from the Lily Foundation in the United States, The Salvation Army has been working on conceptualizing and writing training curricula for faith-based emergency responders. With the help of funding from the Harold E. Ballard foundation, work has been ongoing to adapt the training documents for use in Canada.

We are pleased to announce that access to several of the training courses is now available.

The NDTP curriculum is comprehensive, encompassing numerous different topics categorized as introductory, intermediate and advanced level training courses. Each course has been uniquely designed based upon adult learning principles, incorporating interactive exercises that challenge participants to apply the information obtained to disaster relief scenarios. A package of material has been developed for each course that includes a participant course guide, an instructor course guide, and audio-visual materials. Training courses and materials are available to divisions, as well as to
other faith-based organizations, through their respective territorial office. Official NDTP courses are:

There are several ways to arrange for NDTP training sessions:

i)    Divisional staff, with the approval of their Divisional Commander may invite accredited instructor(s) to conduct training  OR

ii)    Divisional staff, with the approval of their Divisional Commander may request the Territorial Emergency Disaster Services Director to arrange a training session and provide an accredited instructor for the course(s) selected.  OR

iii)    Local or Divisional emergency services personnel may initiate a training session with the approval of the Divisional Commander or designate.


PLEASE NOTE THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL METHODS OF ARRANGING A TRAINING SESSION:

i)    The Divisional Commander or designate must approve of the training session.

ii)    The dates, locations and participant names with their contact information must be sent to the Territorial Emergency Disaster Services Director to ensure that the instructor is duly qualified, has all the training materials required, and that the EDS personnel data base is completed immediately following the session.
