The Salvation Army Gateway is a shelter and drop-in center for adults in the downtown core of Toronto. It is a continuation of a small drop-in ministry of The Salvation Army, which began in 1980.
This facility is a "gateway" to many different goals such as community, belonging, dignity, respect, recovery, reconciliation, friendship, and God.
In 2006 many lives were touched through Gateway. The following are a few pieces of evidence that reveal how necessary communities such as Gateway are:
- There were 56,099 visits in 2006. Over 100 men used the showers daily
- Housing workers housed 174 people
- 775 of the people who stayed there were first time visits
- The average age of all the people who stayed is exactly 41
- 328 1-hour interviews were held with people to try and develop a case plan to better their situations
- The addictions counselor helped 34 men get into a treatment centre for their addiction
- 111,541 meals were served
- The drop-in centre (open 5 days a week) fed 18,000 people over and above shelter residents
- A weekly women's Bible study group for drop-in participants was developed
This is just a taste of what Gateway is doing in the community. For more information visit
