On June 8, 2006, The Salvation Army in Regina launched 'It's a girl thing.' A campaign aimed to bring awareness about the issues surrounding sexual exploitation and prostitituion.
As part of the campaign, The Salvation Army is raising funds to build a safe home for women in the sex trade.
Although planning for the 'Rahab Home' is in the beginning stages, the estimated costs of the project's startup will be about $2.4 million and hopes to open by the fall of 2007.
Owned and operated by The Salvation Army the home will provide a safe place where the women can learn new skills and how to be contributing members of society.
There are at least 300 women involved in the city's sex trade, not including under aged workers, and the numbers are increasing.
There are also about 45 minors in Regina who are being sexually exploited working on the streets, some younger than 12. On average, females begin working the streets in Canada shortly after they turn 14.
