The Board of Trustees of The Salvation Army William and Catherine Booth College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Donald E. Burke as the fourth president of Booth College, effective April 1, 2007. Commenting on the appointment of Dr. Burke, the Chair of the Board, Dr. Marjory Kerr, stated, “The Board has worked closely with Dr. Burke during his tenure as Interim President and has full confidence in his capacity to fulfill the mandate of President and to provide the leadership that will enable Booth College to continue to grow in its mission, impact and influence. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with Dr. Burke as he assumes this role.â€
Donald Burke came to Booth College when it opened in 1982 and has served the College in a number of administrative roles in addition to fulfilling his responsibilities as a member of the faculty. Most recently, from 2000-2006 he served the College as Vice President and Academic Dean of Booth College and since July 2006 he has been its Interim President.
Dr. Burke is a biblical scholar whose studies and teaching have focused on the Hebrew Bible. However, his broad theological interests include the New Testament, Christian history, Wesleyan studies and theology more generally. His B.A. is from Wilfrid Laurier University and both his M.A. and Ph.D. are from the University of St. Michael’s College (University of Toronto) in Toronto.
A member of The Salvation Army, Dr. Burke was raised in Brantford, Ontario. He is married to Sherilyn and has a daughter (Laura) aged 16 and a son (Graham) aged 12.
William and Catherine Booth College operates under the auspices of The Salvation Army as an institution offering primarily undergraduate education on its main campus in Winnipeg, at extension sites across North America and around the world through distance education. In addition to its programs for traditional undergraduate students, Booth College supports leader development for The Salvation Army nationally and internationally from its campus in Winnipeg. Booth College is an Approved Teaching Centre of the University of Manitoba and a member of the Winnipeg Theological Cooperative. In 2007 Booth College is celebrating its 25th anniversary year.
