Human Trafficking Awareness Conference

The Salvation Army Canada & Bermuda Territory is hosting a
Human Trafficking Awareness Conference April 16-18, 2007 at Jackson’s Point Conference Centre.

Purpose


  • To bring together members of The Salvation Army’s Territorial Human Trafficking Working Group and representatives of The Salvation Army front line outreach personnel to raise awareness of anti-trafficking initiatives in Canada and around the world.



  • To identify existing prevention, intervention and exit programs for those trafficked as well as other forms of commercial sexual exploitation.



  • To identify gaps in services and best practices in addressing the needs of those exploited and to work towards divisional action plans for The Salvation Army to assist in the fight against human trafficking in Canada.


This gathering involves keynote/plenary speakers and workshop presenters who approach the issue of human trafficking and prostitution from a variety of perspectives. Perspectives will include journalism/awareness raising, prevention and intervention.

Outside organizations include Government of Canada, RCMP (Ottawa), The Salvation Army USA and Mexico, and Municiple Law Enforcement.

The Salvation Army internationally has declared human sexual trafficking to be a great social evil to be combatted aggressively on all fronts. As an international organization that is active in over 109 countries.

The Salvation Army has an international network of frontline, administrative and other personnel who can educate the public to prevent human trafficking, identify potential victims of human trafficking, intervene to provide support to victims of human trafficking, offer alternatives to sex work to those affected by prostitution and human trafficking and assist in repatriation where necessary.

The Salvation Army in Canada has established a territorial working group on human trafficking that consists of representatives of each of the 10 provinces and contacts with personnel responsible for supervising The Salvation Army’s work in the territories.
