GuluWalk is a one-day worldwide event focused on raising awareness, support and a push for peace for the abandoned children of Northern Uganda.
Two summers ago, a couple guys decided to raise awareness of the 20 year Civil War in Uganda, and how it's affected the children. In Toronto they walked the same distance each day that Ugandan children must walk to reach the safety of refugee camps each night (only to wake up the next day and repeat the same walk back to their villages for school and 'normal' life). The guys did this for one month and slept outside City Hall where they ended their daily walk. During that time they were featured on CBC and in the Toronto Star. This gained attention for the first official GuluWalk last October. Over 1,000 people attended that walk.
On October 21 there will be another walk, not only in Toronto but in 70 other cities in Canada and around the world. The goal this year is to raise $1 million for the children of Northern Uganda. In Toronto, the walk is about two hours long. It starts at 1 p.m. and registration starts at 11:30 a.m. Following the walk musicians and speakers will take part.
The walk starts at Lawrence Park (south-east corner of Yonge & Lawrence), goes south on Yonge to Queen Street, West on Queen Street and ends at City Hall/ Nathan Phillips Square. Click here to sign up for fundraising.
The Salvation Army will be serving hot and cold drinks and snacks after the walk. If you're interested in doing this rather than walking, e-mail k7lewis@ryerson.ca
