VisionTV Looks at Christianity in China

With the Beijing Olympic Games set to begin on August 8, world attention is focused now on China as never before. What do China's citizens believe in? What part does religious faith play in the lives of a people experiencing massive economic and cultural upheaval? Throughout the week of July 21, VisionTV presents "God in China," a week-long programming event that sheds light upon the spiritual life oF China's people.

The Chinese government has long sought to suppress religious faith among its citizens. Recently, however, officials have cautiously begun to relax their grip. Across the country, networks of household churches and village temples are powering an astonishing religious revival. This two-part Canadian documentary examines both the impact of this new religious freedom, and the government's continued efforts to control faith. Tonight: "The Bamboo Cross," charts the rapid growth of Christianity in China and tells the stories of clergy and believers who must choose between worshipping openly or in the shadows.
