September 3 - In 1934, in London, England, Evangeline Cory Booth, the seventh child of Salvation Army founder William Booth, became the fourth elected commander and the first woman general of The Salvation Army at age 69.

September 5 - In 1997, Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to the destitute, died in Calcutta, India, at age 87.
