The Deer Run Community Centre in Calgary was the setting for an early February "Family Skate Night". The evening, sponsored by the Deer Run Community Association, featured free hot dogs, hot drinks, a bonfire, and lots of fun on the outdoor rinks. The Salvation Army's South Meadows Community Church, which meets at the Community Centre, was on hand to serve hot chocolate and apple cider from the Community Response Vehicle.
The congregation views this as a great opportunity to build on the emerging partnership between the church and the Community Association. Captain Steve Wiseman, pastor of South Meadows, explains that this as an extension of the church's mission. "Part of our church vision for this year is the continued fostering of our relationship with the community centre, and partnering with them in the programming they provide to Deer Run."
It was a great evening, with volunteers from the church serving over 250 hot drinks to members of the community. Many thanks to The Salvation Army's Emergency and Disaster Services for supporting South Meadows as they continue to find ways to reach out into the community.
