starsearch.jpgIn the spring of 2005, the congregation of Mississauga Temple was challenged by Major Doug Binner, CO, to accept a 'Kingdom Assignment' based on 'The Parable of the Talents' (Mathew 25:14-30). This parable is a metaphor for using God's gifts to grow His Kingdom. The Mississauga Temple band followed through on the challenge and the result was 'Star Search 2006', an instrumental solo competition for non-salvationist brass musicians. Participants were in grades 7 through 12 within the Peel District school board. On the day of the competition, Sat, April 22, 2006, a group of band members met at 8 a.m. for a time of prayer, asking God's blessing and direction over everything that would take place that day. At 8:30 a.m. the participants arrived for registration. Rehearsals followed and students were coached by members of the Mississauga Temple Band.

The competition followed lunch that was provided by members of the corps ladies group. Bandmaster Brian Burditt (formerly of the Canadian Staff Band), Dr. Cameron Walter (U of T Professor and Assoc. Dean of the Faculty of Music) and Larry Shields (Musical Director of the Weston Silver Band and the Hanniford Youth Band) were adjudicators.

starsearch3.jpgA 'GALA Concert' was held in the evening with the Mississauga Temple Band (B/M Robert Miller) and the Mayfield Secondary School Junior Concert Band (Leader ' Leeann Green-Smith). During the concert, the winning contestant in each category was featured playing their contest pieces.

The winners of each category were invited to play their solo item in a Sunday morning meeting at Mississauga Temple. On Sunday, June 4, 2006, the three category winners will be featured in the morning meeting. All other participants have been invited to join with the Mississauga Temple Band on this Sunday morning.

During the presentation of the awards, Brian Burditt made the observation that at the conclusion of a great day there was no losers. All contestants were definite winners with their participation in the day's events.

starsearch2.jpgThe response from the contestants, their families and from the representatives of the music departments from the various represented schools of the Peel District School Board gave an indication that this event had been blessed and directed by God.

Members of the Mississauga Temple Band had opportunity to share their faith. They pray this will be an annual event as they share 'God's Gifts To Grow His Kingdom.'
